In the greater Katy, Cinco Ranch, The Energy Corridor, and Richmond area, Bamboo flooring has been growing in popularity thanks to its durability, sustainability and beauty. Despite this popularity, many people don’t know much about bamboo and why it’s a great flooring option. Our experts at Floor Coverings International Katy are here to help you learn more about this quality wood-style floor.
While often grouped with hardwood floors, bamboo floors are actually made from a species of grass called “Moso.”
Most bamboo flooring is created from stalks of bamboo that are four to five years old. These stalks are then sliced into strips and woven or laid into planks. Most bamboo flooring is a light tan color with minimal grain variation and a smooth finish. If you prefer a darker wood look, don’t worry, there are plenty of stain options that you can choose to use if prefer a different look.
Conservationists like bamboo for its ability to replenish itself quickly, giving bamboo flooring a “green” quality that most hardwood floors don’t have. Bamboo ranks quite high on the Janka hardness scale.
Despite its strength, bamboo flooring can be cut relatively easily using only a compound miter or hand saw. It is also adaptable to a wide number of surfaces, and can be fixed to plywood or even concrete. While traditionally light colored, you can stain bamboo flooring to match almost any décor. As it ages, it will take on a patina that only adds to its charm.
